Ingredients Of Amoxicillin in Q&A
Can I use Fish Mox instead of pre ion Amoxicillin? Are there any real differences between Fish Mox and Amoxicillin? The ingredients list nothing other than Amoxicillin. Couldn't I be saving lots of money by taking Fish Mox instead? Is there any good reason not to?

Hugh G. Rection replied: "It's forumlated for animals, and doesn't adhere to FDA regulations for human consumption. So it's not recommended. Although...a fish is a living organism...and while I can't recommend that you take it because that would be unethical...I can say that you wouldn't necessarily come to harm because of it. Just make sure you definitly have a bacterial infection, otherwise you're just wasting your time."

What is the ingredient in Augmentin that people can have an allergic reaction to besides the amoxicillin? My daughter has taken Amoxicillin before with no complications. She's recently been diagnosed with pneumonia and was prescribed Augmentin. She broke out in hives from it. Can she be allergic to the clavulanate potassium?

Janna P replied: "Yes, she can be allergic to the clavulanic acid. Call her physician to change her medicine for this infection. Write down this allergy so you can tell all her future health care practitioners. Its important that you inform them that she can take the Amoxicillin, but that the Augmentin caused a problem, so that her physicians and pharmacy will know its not the amoxicillin, but the clavulanic acid Good luck!"

My friend takes Amoxicillin for fish tanks, can it hurt her? You can buy Penicillin and Amoxicillin at a fish shop in our town, it is made to put in the fish tank to fight bacteria in the fish tank. She had a bad ear infection but couldn't afford to go to the doctor so she bought the Amoxicillin and is taking it to treat the ear infection, it is working but can it hurt her? The ingredients on her bottle say 250 mg Amoxicillin Activity. Please only answer if you have a serious and truthfull answer.

starrwoode replied: "its the same thing but i would think stuff for the fish would be a way smaller dose and weaker than the stuff for humans, so i dont see how it can help much, i can get amoxicillin at wallmart for 4 dollars a per ion now. and so can she. but its true a doctor has to write the ."

LB replied: "Yes it could, it is for animals and not humans!!! It could contain contaminates like lead, dirt, feces who knows. That is why it clearly says on the package NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION."

NFS2007 replied: "I would honestly suggest submitting this question to web md and see what they say , it is private and they are real physicians. plus they may recommend other options to buying antibiotics from a pet store. You are a very good friend for caring."

tomkat1528 replied: "It is against the law to use the Antibiotic in any other way than it was sold - She is only fooling herself"

J_M0NEY replied: "i guess, but tat is quite a ill-advised thing to do, as it is designed for fish.. not humans it will probably hurt her, but it varies on how much it will. However, it might not affect her that much and she may recover. much sorrow for ur friend, no even being able to afford to go to the doctor.. try vitamins or something next time, or tylenol i ono"

ru.barbie2 replied: "I have heard of people taking animal medication... but it is very dangerous. First of all, how does she know that she needs 250 mg. and how often she will have to take it? Second, it may clean an aqurium but what if it has other additives that she does not know about? I would tell my friend not to take it. There is an organization that helps people who need medication. It is the big orange bus PPA association that Montel Williams does the ad for. There are also free clinics all over the nation. The health department fees are based on income ... she probably would not have to pay anything. Also, physicians will give you samples if they know you are not covered by insurance. If she feels that she has to self diagnosis, at least she needs to take an antiobiotic that has been prescribed to a human! Help her now!"

doglas p replied: "According to medical professionals, the answer is no. Who truly knows? Don't either of you know a nurse who can help with dosage? You could make an anonymous call to the E.R. and tell the nurse on call the situation and that she cannot be talked out of taking the med. Sometimes they can/will help."

WhiteLine Express replied: "yes, it can hurt her. Drugs sold over the counter, for veterinary use are not strickly regulated by the FDA like pre ion drugs that are for human consumption and use. The "fish" antibiotics are made with inferior products that can conain alot of ingredients that can harm the human body. They can be too potent or not potent enoguh and can make the strain of infection stronger. They can also contain certain things that are toxic to humans that are not toxic to fish. Please tell her to stop doing this immediatly and to see a doctor and let the doctor know what she has been taking. I would hate for something bad to happen to her for being uneducated for takng a veterinary medicine. Make sure she takes any of those pills with her so they can be analyzed at a laboratory to be exactly certain what is in them. There will be things not mentioned on the bottle that will be detected. Even if she has to find a free clinic, she needs to go immediatly..or simply go to a hospital tonight, you do not have to have any money on hand to be treated at a hospital immediatly.. You have me worried about your friend. I am a Pharmacy tech/STNA/CNA and am currently a Nursing student who works full time in healthcare, so I wouldnt just tell you this to scare you without a valid reason to be worried..."
